INTRAC, MC-Med and the NGO Support Centre Launch the Cypriot Civil Society Strengthening Programme
Nicosia, 1 March 2007—The Cypriot Civil Society Strengthening Programme is officially being launched this month! This new initiative aims to contribute to a strengthened role of civil society as a crucial actor in deepening citizen participation in decisions affecting the island’s future and development.

The event is open to all who are interested in learning more about this initiative. The programme is supported by Action for Cooperation and Trust (ACT). There will be a presentation of the Programme, and a Q&A session followed by a Press Conference. According to ACT’s Programme Manager Jaco Cilliers, “UNDP believes that a healthy civil society is key to a functioning democracy. From this perspective this programme is important for the future of Cypriot civil society, which has a special capacity for informing the public and encouraging participation, dialogue and engagement in important issues. As Cypriots look ahead, this public engagement will be crucial for shaping new ideas and coming to a new consensus about how this island will look in the future.”

A partnership of two Cypriot and one UK-based civil society support organisations are bringing a diverse combination of training and capacity building support services to voluntary sector organisations in Cyprus. This innovative Programme combines a range of approaches offering various opportunities to get involved:

OPEN TRAINING COURSES FOR CYPRIOT CSOs
Our Open Training courses for Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities are developed to promote participatory learning by exploring a combination of conceptual and practical issues. Trainers from INTRAC, alongside trainers from MC-Med and NGO Support Centre will deliver these courses. Forthcoming courses for Spring and Summer 2007 include:

? Strengthening Civil Society and Understanding CSOs
? Project Development: Ideas into Action / Project Management
? Raising Resources
? Monitoring and Evaluation
? Networking and Relationship Building

TAILOR-MADE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FOR CYPRIOT CSOs
The Programme also offers tailor-made technical support to individual CSOs across Cyprus. We offer a range of capacity building support, from organisational development to monitoring and evaluation systems development, from strategic planning to project proposals and implementation.

LONG-TERM CAPACITY BUILDING SUPPORT TO CYPRIOT CSOs
The Programme is working with 15-20 organisations across Cyprus to support the development of their organisational capacity, beginning with capacity assessment and action planning, leading to implementation and review.

DIALOGUING EVENTS FOR CIVIL SOCIETY AND NON-CSO ACTORS
The Programme will be convening a range of events – workshops, conferences, roundtables – to promote the exchange of ideas and knowledge on a range of critical issues facing Cypriot civil society. Events will draw together actors from within civil society and from other sectors to increase debate and informed decision-making.
