Nicosia, 3 December 2009 – The Cyprus Community Media Centre (CCMC) is having its opening ceremony on 09 December 2009 at a new facility in the grounds of the Ledra Palace Hotel, Nicosia, Cyprus.
Honorary guests Desmond Tutu, Jimmy Carter and Lakhdar Brahimi of the eminent ‘Elders’ group, will be opening the centre, followed by the chance to see community media in action, through multimedia installations, video projections, photographs and stories collected from across Cyprus.
The Elders will be in Cyprus to offer their support to individuals and organisations who seek to build greater trust and dialogue between the communities of this island.
CCMC is a new initiative supported by UNDP Action for Cooperation and Trust (ACT) which aims to create a more diverse, vibrant and community-led media landscape through its work with community based organisations across Cyprus.
With the opening of the centre, which is equipped with training materials, audiovisual equipment and resources to build capacity in communications and media, CCMC hopes to increase the ability of civil society organisations to speak for themselves, enhance their communications, as well as use innovative new methods to increase public awareness of the work they do.
Notes for editors: The CCMC is supported by the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Action for Cooperation and Trust (ACT) peace building project. Launched in 2005, ACT aims to create opportunities for Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to work together on projects that will benefit all people on the island, while also promoting inter-communal tolerance and mutual understanding.
